Dave Heitzman and I (Mike Ernst) are co-chairing the next revision of the 61-62 judging manual.
If you have any items that you think should be addressed, I/we would appreciate your input. You can either post them here, or email me through here.
For us to consider a change, we need more than an "I think"--we need serial number of the car, your history with the car, why you think the change is necessary, and also the "context" of the car.
In oher words, if a car is a completely restored car done by someone else with a lot of restamps, etc., it's tough to determine that specified part is original. However, if the car was just dragged out of a 30-year storage and still has the original hoses, belts, radiator cap, and non-DOT BFG Silvertowns, then there is a better chance that specified part or finish was original from the factory.
If you have, or have access to, a phenomenally original car, and would be interested in checking some items that we have question marks about against that car, we would appreciate that kind of input as well.
Thanks for any or all help---we're not trying to make the judging process more difficult, we're simply trying to identify what is truly correct and what is just sorta correct or just plain wrong. The idea is to reward the "as it left St. Louis" car and owner for originality.
E.g.--did you know that the screws holding the lenses in the front parking lights and taillights were originally magnetic stainless? That means that old silver 62 that I redid in '78 and upon which I put NOS front parking lights has an issue--by then those retaining screws were non-magnetic. So, off I go to Carlisle in August to find some beat-up old lights in the bottom of a $5 each bucket so that I can pay $2.50 per screw in order to get my car back to what it was when the good general delivered it (and before the time that I made changes without really good evaluation of what I was putting on.
I will not promise that we will make the change that you advocate--I do promise that we will take seriously your input, weigh that along with othes who are looking at the same part on other cars, and make the very best informed decision that we can make.
Thanks!!!
Mike Ernst
