    64-67 Stock Shifter 4-speed

I purchased a rebuild kit for my stock shifter and realized that there was a major difference between the so called replacement reverse lockout T-handle part, and my worn out "so called original" The original part had a set screw that holds the rod that is used as the lockout feature, the replacement did not have the set screw and the rod was shorter. The replacement fit, but it was not long enought to engage the stop to prevent lockout. My shifter has a part number on the chrome shaft near the bottom (3874840). The number could be 3 (8/9) 74 (8/6) 40. Is this shifter the wrong part, what are my options. Believe it or not...I want the reverse lockout feature to work.

Thanks for your help...ps The car is an early 64.

I have a '68 shifter in my hand, and the last number on it is a "0" wich would lead me to believe you have a 68-up shaft or shifter. measure from the center of the pivot pin to the top of the shaft (ball off) a '68 is 8 1/2 inches in this measurement. A '64-67 shaft is about 1 inch shorter. That would explain your problem. The later shaft was available as a service item much later than the '67. I believe you can get the '67 shaft in the repro market.

      Thanks Bill,

I will measure it tonight! Do you remember where you saw the handle by itself in the repop market?

IF your car has the correct 64-67 shifter linkage to begin with, the correct reproduction reverse lockout is available from Paragon under their number PR-101 or Dr. Rebuild under their #4001228. I'm sure that the other vendors carry it, too.

Corvette Central has a complete kit that looks to have the shaft, along with t-handle, lockout, etc, not too expensive (about $60) call them & see if it contails the proper shaft.

Bill you were right on! The shaft is 8 1/2" I have the wrong part. Can I purchase the 7 1/2" shaft and use it to convert the 68 shifter to a 64? When I received the rebuild kit it shows a spring/bell washer that fits on the shifter shaft mounting bolt. There is not enough tolerance in my shifter to put that piece in place.Any experience converting the 68 and up back to a mid year shifter?
