    Light Rust...removal & prevention?

I'm looking for any suggestions based on previous experiences in removing very light rust on the following parts and areas under the car, i.e., unpainted master cylinder, starter motor, a few different chassis bolts, and areas of the exhause system. Any particular solvents, grade # steel wool, etc., that I should be looking to pick up? I picked up on a recommendation a few months back and purchased a can of Pre-Lube 6 as a means of prevention...however I was a little bit late in doing so. After it's removal, what would be the proper steps to take to prepare the MC for painting? Thanks.

    Ray,

If you use any of the strong rust removers it will cause the part to rust back over worse than it was when it dries. You can use the "GOO BE GONE" type orange citrus cleaners to remove light rust, or Eagle brand "etching formula" mag wheel cleaner. As far as rust preventiion on bare metal parts, good old Krylon satin clear works in warm, dry climates very well. If you soak bare steel bolts, nuts, etc. that have been cleaned well in WD40 over night, they resist rust pretty well. I did this on my steering column shaft where it enters the rag joint and other similar parts. Again, I live in a dry, warm climate and used these methods on my '67 with good results. Good luck...

      Ray,

Try this web site www.carwell.com. I live in the northeast where the roads become white with salt. This is a rust proofing product that gets sprayed into predrilled holes for rust prevention in our area. It is a light oil type substance that "crawls" into those inner areas to repel water and prevent rust. It can be put on new or old cars. The reason I point this out is that I did a total suspension rebuild on me 66 Coupe last winter 2004. I had them spray the entire underbody of the car along with the inner parts of the frame. Not one spot of rust on any of those new parts in over a year. Now I don't drive the car in the winters up here let me say. The product comes in spray cans for small jobs like I think you are asking. Just a thought.

        Ray,
I like a fine grade steel wool on very lightly rusted parts, chrome etc. Bolts and other hardware I use the wirewheel on benchgrinder, caution because bolts can get launched at high speeds and always wear eye protection. I use face shield along with eye glasses. I also beadblast, but use caution not to 'overdue' them because of etching the surface. I use Krylon Satin clear because it has less sheen, works well to protect, I use cast grey also. Make sure to prep surface before painting to remove contamination. I use the Kleen Strip line of products, with which I have had good results! You can get this at Pepscams, Napa, etc.

I recently had some great success removing rust from the chrome bumpers and other parts on my 56 Ford F100 pickup. I used a product called CLR which I purchased at Tru Value. Rubbed it on with a dish cleaning sponge and wiped the rust off. For heavier rust areas I used some very fine steel wool.
