Was recently looking through the lastest issue of Hemmings and saw an ad for a 65 coupe silver/silver, Rare, ect, ect .. My Question why Rare? How many units were produced with this color combination? Can anyone any one answer this?.................Thanks

Re: Rare?
This subject comes up frequently and the answer is there are typically no production records for the compound probability of various options (this, with that, but without these). All that can really be said is 2552 vehicles were built with Silver Pearl exterior paint and silver vinyl/silver leather (interior codes 426/427) WERE amoung the factory recommended color combinations to match the exterior paint.
In general, people form a 'rare' option opinion on 'gut feel' based on how often they've seen this/that combination on the cars they've looked at. Along these lines it's also felt that maroon/maroon cars in '65 were 'rare', but there are simply no production figures to support the exact quantity built this way...- Top

Re: Rare?
Joe, I once had a Silver/Silver conv't. with PW,PG,PS,PB and AC. Several people commented on the rarity of the car, but I would say that it was more likely the AC conv't. I have to say though that I have never seen another '65 conv't in this color combo. I have seen other coupes and have seen a few '66 conv't. in this color combo. I could never determine the rarity of the color combo like I could the options.
BTW- some say that "rare" is like the guy with the two inch ----, it is rare, but not very desirable!

Re: Rare?
Had one of those. my second Corvette. A '67 Marlboro Maroon coupe; 300 hp w/ 3-speed. Bought it from a lespian on the NW side. Paid $2850 in '69. I was planning on dropping in a 4-speed; I even had the console plate for the shift pattern. BUT, I was hailed over on the expressway -- "Hey!! Do you want to sell your car?" Had it for 3 months and made $500. Big money in those days.

Re: Rare?
A dealer in Montgomery, Al, just down the road from me, had a 67 coupe with all the whistles and bells, including factory A/C, with a three speed. His conclusion was that the ordering dealer had neglected to check the 4 speed box on the order form. Rare?, ubetcha. Desireable?, wonder if he ever sold it? I'll have to stop in the next time I'm down that way and check.- Top

Re: Rare?
This thread touched a memory. While fresh out of high school working as the lube guy at the Chevy dealer in Wichita, I spotted a spanking new '64 Impala SS on the lot, silver/silver, 283, PG. Have never seen another one. (I thought it looked nice, but a 283 PG SS ????).
As for 3-speeds, my first 3 cars were: '59 Biscayne 2-dr w/348 & 3-2's, a '57 210 2-dr 283/270hp, and a '61 Impala SS 283/230hp. Long live the 3-speeds ....oh! Well, I like 4-speeds too!- Top

'64 Chevelle SS
Dave,
I remember the stunning chrome plated fuel line and air cleaner on those SS 6 cylinders. Those items really perked up the engine compartment. One still sees one now and again at the Chevelle shows.Terry- Top

Re: '64 Chevelle SS
Terry,
It really was a sweet looking ride - red super sport with black interior, buckets and console. I was 15 at the time, and hadn't seen many cars like that at the time, but I did know my hotrods even back then. I still remember my dad popping me for saying "You only got a 6 cylinder?!" Would I have it now? Oh yeah, but chances are you would find a mouse under that hood.- Top

Re: '64 Chevelle SS
I have owned a couple of big block cars, and even have a '77 454 engine now waiting for a new home, but I always will lean toward small blocks - lighter, large selection of reasonably priced parts, and probably most of all: loyalty to an engine design that has served many of us very well. My first car had a 265, the next a 283, and the next a 327.....they're in my blood- Top

Re: '64 Chevelle SS
My brother has a origial silver/black 66 Chevelle SS but not a 396. Has 327, 4-speed, factory air, bucket seats/console with clock in it, and even the factory tach on the column. He was going to give it to me if I would restore it and just let him drive it sometimes. I did not have the garage space to take his offer. He still has it in a storage building. Even has the mag wheels of the era, Torque-Thrust.- Top
