    RPO 684 Big Brake question?

Can anyone tell me the proper length of the front 2 1/2" brake shoe hold down spring pins?? How about for the 2" rears?

Re: RPO 684 Big Brake question?

Justin--I can tell you that the RPO 687 hold-down pins all had a number "4" stamped on the base---that's a length designation, but I don't know what it specifies. If you get no other response, let me know, and I'll try and dig one up and measure it. 684 and 687 had identical width shoes, so there's no reason to believe that 684 wouldn't have used "4"s.

      Mike,
I've been reading every article I can find on RPO cars including your articles and found a wealth of information and research on this ellusive subject. Jerry Wagner wrote an article "Solid Axle RPO Cars", ninth edition and in his article its says RPO 687 cars have #6 pins in the front and #8 pins in the rear. That is the only reference I have been able to find on the pins. Can you help us clarify this.???? Thanks.

Re: RPO 684 Big Brake question?/Addendum

        Mike,
Jerry Wagner's article says RPO 684 cars use #6 pins in the front and #4 pins in the rear. Your logic seems correct in that 684 and 687 cars would use the same pins as the rear shoes were the same. Did 684 cars use 2 1/2' front shoes. ????

I checked the 687 spring setup I have

in the plastic bag and they are, indeed, #8's. I am not taking off a wheel to check the 684's - I'm looking for a picture......

Re: I checked the 687 spring setup I have

            Loren,
The pins have the number on the head and should be visable from the side of the backing plate facing the pumpkin. No disassembly required.
