OT Mako Sharks & Turbojet Engines not Vette!

While in Knoxville for the Corvette Expo I visited 2 museums in the vicinity. I was surprised to see the following manual authored by our own old Brushy Mountain Poppa Smurf. It was not in our Society bookstore, however, but in the Warbirds Museum in Sevierville, TN.

        And, We Think Vette Parts...

Are hard to find and expensive!...How hard do you think it is to find turbine buckets or compressor blades for your Mig 17?! Of course, it may be like every thing else...easy to get from China!!

Doc, the top photo is the military version of the Beechcraft D-18; they built thousands of these, and most are permanently parked as unflyable at country airports, are on display in museums, or have been scrapped due to an AD (Airworthiness Directive) that grounded them for corrosion of the center section of the main wing spar; the repair required to re-certify them for flight costs far more than the airplane is worth. Neat airplane in its day.

Actually, there are several military versions of the Model 18. This one is a SNB-2 built for the Air Force from 1940 - 1955.

I still like the Model 17 Staggerwing best though. I wish we still built it. Many of us Ole Beechcrafters have tried to lobby bringing a retro version of the 17 back into production, but as you might guess....no real business case in todays world of General Aviation.

            oh well,

Reference the Norden Bomb Sight. What were the crosshairs in the sight made from?

Re: Blond Hair ??? Spiders Web ???

I am trying to remember where the article is located that I saved from about 18 years ago that pictured the young woman who supplied the hair. They tried spider web, but it would not pass the high altitude test. The Norden Bomb Sight was still in use during Viet Nam if I remember correctly.
