Can Pot metal be filled?? Any metal suggestion?? I have a local Motorcycle shop that will rechrome pot metal at a very reasonable price.
I need to rechrome my grille surrounds and eyebrows. I have been told that the reproductions (NOS) are of poor quality and fit. Any good sources for these parts would be appreciated.
I had the vent window frames plated on my 63. They are pot metal. I was told by the plater that they would fill the pits in with lead. I would think you would want your plater to do the filling. If you do it yourself who do you complain to if you don't like the result. The plater will blame you if you do the prep.
Zamak Die Cast is the correct name. The only way to repair pitting is the part has to be stripped of all plating I Blast the parts with Alum. Oxide some times I have to drill in to the pits to remove all traces of oxidation the part then has to be Flash copper plated then the pits can be filled with solder or lead sanded smooth then plated with copper again polished/buffed this process may need to be done 3-4 times then the part would go to nickel plate then chrome. Solder or lead will not stick to Zinc die cast thats why you have to put copper on first. I also youse a silver loaded epoxy to fill pits on the zinc die cast and then copper plate. Hopes this helps
