    C2 67 Dash & Instrument cluster

Has anyone tried to install the instrument cluster into the dash (dash is loose & out of car) and then hook up all wiring BEFORE placing dash into final position?

I also have the windshield out so it appears that I could work thru that area and see the rear of the cluster with the dash propped on supports.

    Thoughts......

Harry thanks for the tip on removal and replacement of the cluster. I'm beyond that point. I have my cluster AND dash assy out of the car. I'm clear to the firewall. My question was if its easier to place the cluster in the dash and THEN connect the wires etc and FINALLY place the dash into the final position in the car. Not many people remove the entire dash assy when restoring....as it is glued and riveted in place. Based on a tour of a GM plant (not Corvette) they wired the instruments and dash board prior to placing the entire assy into the body. I thought maybe Corvette assy lines possibly did the same thing.

        Steve,

In order to get your cluster wiring harness to attach correctly to the dash, you will have to set the dash first and then install the cluster. I just pulled and replaced the cluster twice without pulling the whole dash.

I did it the hard way, with the seats and steering wheel in place. But when I took it out, I labelled each little connector and bulb with little white label stickers and then drew a sketch. After 6 months to a chiropractor, I realized I should have at least taken the driver's seat out, if not with the steering wheel.

You have to lay on your back under the dash and pull the cluster close to it. Then work as if you have eyes on your fingers under the dash and starting from the top down. When you think you have everything connected, then test it out, and close it up.

And then make an appointment with your chiropractor.

I don't think there is an easier way or whether there is enough flexibility in the wiring harness to assemble the cluster in the dash first and then install the dash. You are still going to have to get under the dash for the oil pressure gage line, hood release, Tach and speedo cables, light motor switch, and light switch. But, maybe!
