    Mag. Wheel Help

I am thinking of installing American Racing Wheel mags on my 65 coupe. The model I want is the "Torque Thrust D". I am a bit confused as to what size wheel will work without rubbing or causing interference with the caliper and if I should look for other problems before purchasing. My main concern is that a dealer is recomending a 15 x 7 wheel when, I believe, the original rims I now use are 15 x 6. Any direction from knowledgeable board members would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Bill -

Torq-Thrust D's won't fit and clear your calipers without a spacer, and spacers are NOT a good idea (nor are 7" rims on a midyear). There's an excellent, highly-detailed post in the thread linked below that explains the entire American Racing wheel fitment situation for disc-brake Corvettes by Jerry Bramlett at:

      Re: Mag. Wheel Help

It is my understanding that the early D-wheels will fit corvette and were popular. Then for years they stoped producing the one's that fit without a spacer. Recently within the last couple of years I heard they started to reproduce the original D-wheels because of popular demand. I believe they even produce them in 16" and 17" wheels. Don't quote me on this stuff.

I have a set of original 7" D-wheels for my 68 that are restored and I will use when I finish my project. They came off a 67 corvette that was being raced in these vintage race events. I think they are the best looking after market wheel for corvette.

Good luck and let us know what you find out. Terry

        Re: Mag. Wheel Help

Based on Jerry Bramletts article on the history of Torque Thrust mags, I believe that what will fit without spacers and give caliper clearance is the Torque Thrust II Classic, Series CL205. So far, the best price I have been quoted is $244 per wheel. Does anybody know a source that might be cheaper? I also plan on putting either red or gold line tires on the wheels so this is a major investment for me. Anymore personal experiences or advice would be much apreciated. Thanks again.

          Newstalgia Wheels

Good package deals! By coincidence, I am ordering a set of Torq-Thrust D's for my '63 today. However, I'm ordering from a local business in order to support them.

LOVE the look of these wheels!

            Re: Newstalgia Wheels

These AR CL-205 wheels came from Newstalgia. The price was $216.00 each plus $25.00 shipping to Canada. The spinners were extra.

I just found a source for early TT spinners

If anyone is interested, the early TTs used a 2 1/8" space between the cap screws. Years ago, AR offered a two blade spinner for their wheels. I just found a source for both two blade and three blade spinners that fit our early AR wheels if anyone is interested. Go ahead and email me.

                Regards,
                Scott
