Things that make you say Hmm

A few years ago, I read an article by an ex GM engineer who was at Tonawanda during 1969. If I remember correctly, he was saying that the first ZL1 engine assembled on the line (in a separate "clean room") was in Jan 1969 and was stolen. The second was assembled a week or so later and was totalled when it fell off the test stand during it's break in. Also, the earliest 074 casting head I have seen was dated Jan '69, but there was a prototype "0-" head on e-bay a few yeas ago dated Nov '68. So, if the first ZL1 car was assembled in Nov '68, it was probably assembled with either the prototype heads or closed chamber heads and likely with a Chapperal prototype block.

By the way, the other ZL1 appears to have the 842 casting closed chamber heads, and old photos of the ZL1 from GM press releases also show the core plugs in the ends of the heads (no production 074 heads had core plugs as far as I know).

Here's a link to the car I believe that you are talking about.

This website is an online photo gallery of the cars in Kevin Suydam's extensive Musclecar collection. This collection consists of over 100 plus of the rarest Corvettes and American high performance muscle cars ever produced. Click on each category thumbnail to enter that particular group. To view full sized photos, doubleclick on thumbnail photos to enlarge them. The website is constantly in process of updates. Keep checking back as there are over 10 cars in various stages of restoration yet to be posted. There are also newly obtained cars for which good photos need to be taken, weather permitting. *Update* 1/11/23 Added approximately 25 cars (Mostly Mopars) but need to add more photos of each car, such as interior and engine compartment. Then type descriptions for each one. Kevin is always interested in adding to his collection--specifically American and Canadian high performance muscle cars and Corvettes. His primary interest is the 1967 to 1971 model years and the cars could be restored or in need of restoration but they must be authentic. If you yourself have such a supercar, factory or dealer high performance car or race car for sale, or know of others email Kevin.

Link is not working correctly, click on "photo gallery" and all his cars show up, click on the ZL1.

------The number "1" ZL1 Camaro was delivered in December with a ZL1 motor in it (obviously). This Camaro did not have a prototype engine in it as the car was raced in Arizona in January I believe. ZL1 engines had to have been assembled prior to January and probably prior to December although Im guessing on the December part........Bill S

The first two ZL-1 Camaros were built in late December; we built the first batch of fifty in February (I followed each one or those first fifty down the Norwood engine dress line), and the last seventeen cars were built in March. The roll-testers loved 'em
