"66 GAS TANK FILLER NECK/BODY OPENING

I'm still trying to center the gas tank filler neck in the body opening. The previous owner of my '66 roadster replaced the gas tank with a Quanta exact repro tank and repro straps. The filler neck is quite a bit off center in the lid opening in the body. I replaced the repro straps with a set of used originals hoping it would help center it. It's hard to keep the tank centered while tightening the straps, especially since the body is on the frame. Before I put any more effort into this, I was hoping a couple of roadster owners with tanks that are still factory installed could take a look and tell me just how centered the filler neck is in the body opening of their cars. Thanks....

      Rob:

The filler neck on my 66 convertible is slightly forward of the latitudinal (side-to-side)centerline of the gas door opening but noticeably to the right of the longitudinal (front-to-back)centerline. I have no doubt that this is the original configuration. By the way, mine is an April-built car. I hope this helps.

Rob, I have a 65 roadster and my original gas tank filler neck fit perfectly in the center. I had to replace the gas tank with a Quanta repro tank. I also replaced the original tank straps with repro's and had the same problems you are having now (repro's are too short, too thick and too stiff to work with). I tried to put them on before I put the body back on. I put my original tank straps back on and and everything was fine. Once I had the body back on the chassis I had to recenter the gas tank filler neck in the opening, now it is right on.
One suggestion would be to put longer bolts on the tank straps, then you should be able to center the gas tank filler neck then tighten the bolts. Once you have the tank centered and tightened, remove one bolt at a time and replace with your regular tank bolts.

          Hope this helps,
          Floyd,

            Floyd,

Thanks, I'm trying that method now. I agree with you regarding the repro straps, which is why I'm using a set of used, originals as well as longer bolts to initially put them in place.

I have a Quanta repro tank and original straps on my '67 convertible, and it's very nicely centered in the filler opening.
