The corvette is specific ship classification used over the years by the Royal Namy (and other European navies) and is not a destroyer. The UK needed cheap and seaworthy ships to act as convoy escorts in 1940, and the basis was a trawler hull of about 150 feet and a few hundred tons.
The most common type was referred to as the "flower class" because they were all named after various flowers and seeds. They were built in both the UK and Canada and held the tide against U-boats until the new more powerful destroyer escort type ships became available to share the load.
I wonder if GM knew that those recent corvettes had such humble origins and were named after flowers. Many European navies still use this ship term, but most modern corvettes, whose mission is primarily coastal defense are quite fast.
