    Need Freon/Kit/Special Tools

The compressor on my '85 has been slinging oil for years now, but has finally reached the point where it won't hold a charge for more than a few months. Time for a teardown and rebuild.
I have exhausted my stash of Freon* (R12), and need contact info. Also, I assume that the rebuild kit and necessary seals are GM available. Also, any special tools.

    Re: Need Freon/Kit/Special Tools

    Joe,

I,m taking a long shot here, but if you're near the D/FW Texas area, I might be able to help. Back when I owned four late-model Mustangs, I kept two 30# cans of R-12 on hand to keep them recharged. Bought a vacuum pump, gauges, and have lots of o-rings. Since I sold the Mustangs, I now own no vehicles that use R-12. As such, I have 2 cans of freon R-12 approximately 27# and 30#, that I no longer need. I don't believe I could sell them to you without a license, but I don't know all of the regs. Let me know if I can help.

      Auto zone and NAPA

Auto Zone in my area (Orlando, FL) has been selling off their R12 can taps and recharging kits for about $10. You can buy a compressed air powered vacuum pump from Harbor Freight Tools for about $30.(but you shouldn't use it as it releases the freon into the atmosphere)

NAPA is selling "freeze 12" (a replacement for auto freon - check the Freeze 12 web site) for about $6 a can and it is NOT federally regulated like the R12!

For the record, you must be certified in AC work (an open book test) to purchase R12 or to transfer it's ownership so the Freeze 12 is a lot less hassle. I have been saving my R12 for the collector cars but have used the Freeze 12 in my daughter's Dodge and it seems to work fine - actually blows cold, I had my doubts at first.

      Good luck,
      Mark
