    C5 HUD Double Image

Hi guys! I just got my C5 back from the Chevy dealership after having the windshield replaced. The HUD now has a faint double image. I'm wondering if the dealership used a lower quality aftermarket replacement windshield. The windshield has the markings XYG in the lower right hand corner. Does anyone know if this is an OEM or a replacement windshield? Anyone have any experience with this problem?

    Thanks!

I'm not sure on what's going on with your setup. I do know with the "HUD" the windshield has to have some sort of material in or on the window to make it work. (reflect) I do not know about the C5's, was HUD an option or standard? If so did they put a standard type windshield in? You could be correct with a "lower" grade that doesn't work as good. Ask your dealer about it.

Thanks Ken. The HUD is an option and does require a special windshield to reflect the image. I did call the dealer's parts department and they could not tell me how to identify an OEM vs. aftermarket windshield.

Can anyone check their original C5 windshield with the HUD option, and let me how the glass is labeled for comparison? My replacement has XYG as a manufacturer.

      Thanks!

I'd be asking your dealer whether they installed an OEM windshield or not!

Whether or not the dealer can tell you how to identify one, whomever replaced the glass should be able to tell you where they sourced it from. That should also help.

Thanks everyone. I just wanted to have my facts straight before accusing anyone of a bait and switch. It turns out that it is a cheap aftermarket replacement from China. However, I paid $1300 which is the price for OEM. They are going to replace the windshield with the OEM part.

There is a lesson here for all of you with the HUD. BEWARE of the aftermarket HUD windshields, and make sure you get OEM!

Please advise what dealer did such a fine repair job on your C5. It seems to me that they would be a good one to avoid for any repairs. Generally you go to a Chevy dealer and pay more in order to get quality OEM replacement parts. When they start using cheap import parts while charging you for OEM it is time to find another dealer.

Maybe they should be reported to GM and to the local BBB !

                  Re: C5 HUD Double Image

The HUD image is projected on the surface of the windshield glass. Since a windshield is composed of two thicknesses of glass, there are two reflections. In order to align these two images a wedged shaped plastic laminate is used between the two layers of glass. If the dimensions of the plastic laminate are not correct the images will not fully align and the HUD image will not appear clear. In order to diagnose this condition you can apply Vaseline to the outside of the windshield in the area of the HUD display. If there is no longer a "ghost" image the problem can be attributed to the windshield. The extent of the "ghosting" can be helpful in determining if the vehicle has the proper windshield. If the "ghosting" offset is greater than 25% of the width of a line/bar of a HUD character, the vehicle likely does not have a HUD windshield. If the offset is less, or the vehicle definitely has a HUD windshield, another windshield can be installed that may have less distortion/variance. Use of a non-OEM HUD windshield may result in this condition. Use of a non-HUD windshield will result in this condition. HUD windshields should be identified in the lower right corner of the windshield

                    Re: C5 HUD Double Image

Thanks John! Great information! The ghost image offset is the entire width of the bar. It doesn't just look blurry, but rather there are two distinct images. There are no markings indicating it is a HUD windshield. So apparently, not only is it a cheap aftermarket replacement from China, but it's not even a HUD windshield! The Chevy dealer did the paint and body work and sublet the windshield. The company that did the windshield claims they were doing two vette windshields at the same time and accidently switched them. I'm skeptical but that is certainly possible.

                    Thanks for the great info!

OEM HUD windshield has "Shaded HUD" wording in lower passenger side on my 03. There is a difference. Glad they are doing the "correct" one now.

Thanks Ken. They are going to replace it next week and I want to make sure I get the correct OEM version.
