    Berkeley 05 meet

Well we got back from the Berkeley NCRS meet. We entered our Copper Bubble top 55 Corvette for flight judging. This was to be the first and last time .I was interested to have it on the judging field to see how it would be received by NCRS members in a flight situation.
Well to our surprise and delight it received no negative remarks from any one. Each team went right at it and was surprised how original it was besides the obvious.(every comment was positive) They were great! Later at the banquet Dinner as owners sat anxious to know how their Corvette did, we dint expect any recognition because we never show the 55 Corvettes. But we both just about fell off our chairs when they said Ladies Choice is that Copper 55 Bubble top Corvette. Sweet! A nice Pink ribbon.
I again heard Roy Braatz 55 Corvette second flight,WOW then we were really amazed and shocked. How did that happen. Many people know we have just about every accessory GM ever offered in the 55.The wheels, and radio tires two part paint plus I dint even remove the Bubble Top so that they could judge the soft top??????????WOW
I dint go over the judging sheets with each team . I just signed them , I let the judges know at the start that we weren't looking to receive a flight award but were just supporting the meet by showing the 55. When we get the judging papers back, I'm interested now to go over the sheets and see how it measured up and will get back to you.
We remember all four teams saying that beside the obvious accessories the 55 had all correct and original parts . ( which I knew) but for wear and condition.
Many pic.'s were taken on various parts and many questions asked.
We had a great time with great people and old friends.

I had a great time too. Traveled 698mi R/T bought 51.58gal total $151.89. As Roy said it was a kinder gentler NCRS, great judges, they worked hard to explain the process and they we're real generous on deductions. Met all kinds of faces from the board I won't try and list them all because I'm sure to miss somebody. Had some interesting meetings and the judging school opened up some eyes that were new to the process. Roy's tech seminar on paint was very interesting to say the least. I won't go as far as to say the NCRS endorsed base clear but they certainly are opening up to members that want to use their choice in paint finishes. Not only was the judging field a blast so was the dinner out to Spangers, and the hotel bar saw it's share of our faces. The awards banquet was excellent food was good and the expression on Roy's face when he picked up his pink ribbon was worth the price of admission. Rained and the guys with the "never been in the rain cars" had some tense moments but it cleared up fast and the field stayed pretty dry. All in all great weekend had by all, well except for the guy that found out his new car had fake trim and VIN tags but I let someone else tell that story.

        Kevin,

Nice meeting you and congrats on the Top Flight. 13.5 mpg is not to shabby considering your average speed.

That is an exceptionally nice 3814 carb restoration you have. Let me know if you didn't get full points on the carb, as I am working on mine.

From the things I learned at this meet, I think I'll be putting my 67 in for judging maybe next time. I previously thought I wouldn't stand a chance with my add-ons.

That was another thing we all learned about, how after market and ad ons are judged. If you have a good car the deducts won't keep you from Top Flighting. Now flames and flares that's another thing.

About the mileage I had over a 1/4 tank left when I got home. It took about 3 1/2 tanks round trip, it was funny I stopped at the same staion on the 5 going both ways in Coalinga man that place stinks! from cow sh*t.

Checked the mpg looked more like 14.9. I left off the last tank that had about a quarter left.

                Kevin,

That gas mileage is really not too shabby for your speed. It must be the carb. You ought to send Jerry G. a dozen roses for the looks and performance.

Read the Judging Chairman's column in the Restorer two or three issues ago. Roy Sinor spells it out very clearly. Key word...Appears like lacquer. I also believe the new standard is on the Northern California's Chapter website.
