    C1 Judges advise needed,esp 1958

    To all senior judges,

I recently had an Al Knoch soft top with a zippered back window, for very hot Arizona summers ( Al cut the material himself ) made for my unrestored 1958 Corvette. It is date stamped & has the washing instruction label. If I have it flight judged in October, how many points will be deducted for the zippered window ? I bought a restored 58 soft top frame to put the zippered soft top on. My idea was to keep the original soft top, still in very good condition for its age, have the seams restitched & put back on to the original frame. The (very rare) cloth covered weather stripping & mohair is in very good condition. I am trying to be extremely careful & cautious in the preservation of this very rare unrestored 58. I use this car & do not want to use the original soft top. It cannot be judged for Bowtie. I am just trying to keep these parts intact for historical preservation. Should I be lucky this time to get flight judged in October, is it going to be worth all the trouble & expense putting back the original soft top ? I spent a small fortune this past March to be flight judged, only to miss the cut. I don't want to go through all that expense again for no reason, if I am not going to lose that many points, I will just leave the new soft top on.

    Thanks,
    Deb

"It cannot be judged for Bowtie."

Because it was judged for Bowtie previously?

Realize that very little (save a fully restored car) can PREVENT a car from being judged Bowtie. (Well, you need to pass the Team Leader's OK, but I won't expound on that.) Whether or not it GETS a Bowtie is an entirely different matter. That is up to the opinion of 8 judges at a National Meet. Not you, not me, and not the Team Leader. Some may say it's the roll of the dice that day.

Just one of my pet peeves, that's all, when one person with a nice original car disqualifies their car for the award. I don't think most people have a grasp of the award. Don't take it personally.

Patrick, GRASP MY EYE ! THIS CAR WON 3 STARS ALREADY.
I am sorry if I wasn't clear. I CANNOT get a Bowtie ! I just want to know how many points I can lose for a zipper on a soft top ! When I get flight judged.
IS THERE ANY JUDGE OUT THERE WHO KNOWS THE ANSWER TO THAT VERY SIMPLE QUESTION ?
GEEZ, SORRY, I HAVE A HEAD INJURY, OK. NOW YOU ALL KNOW WHY MY QUESTIONS ARE NOT CLEAR!

        Deb
Read the post I just put up! If my 55 with all the accessories it has can get second flight , you with your top zipper window isn't going to loose much. I would guess may be 2 points.

Geesh, sorry. Then why even mention the Bowtie thing in your post???? Or why not phrase it to say that it's been through the process?

Just trying to simply address the "my car won't Bowtie" thing which pops up almost as much as the "my car won't Top Flight" thing. Nothing more. Again, I said NOT to take it personally. So put your eye back in.

Anyway, I don't think there is a "simple" answer to your question. It could be 2 points as Roy mentions and it could be as many as 10. It will depend on how the judges that day interpret how much the zipper changes the form and function of the top relative to an original. I suspect 2-4 points would be an average, depending on the day.

I'd ask why you're worried about Flight Judging a car that already won 3 Stars, but I'm afraid you'd jump off a cliff.

Re: C1 Judges advise was encouraging

Roy Sinor encouraged me to try for a Top Flight award in Utah by E-Mail. So my wife and I have decided to go for it. This will be the last meet we will ever enter it in , only because it being the 50's year for the old 55. Got second flight in Berkeley , so if I remove the bubble top this time to let the soft top be judged .plus mileage points it could make it.
To see our accessorized baby.with the bubble top next to a $100,000 + restored trailer 55 ( what a sight that would be).It would encourage other we think to enter their driven Corvette

So there is hope for owners to get a flight award having a few things added or missing, which many worry over. We were amazed at Berkeley getting a second flight, just a few years ago that would not happen. We only wonted to have people see it and support NCRS. Were #182 members and showed a Corvette only twice. Now we may even bring out our 67 coup at some meet.

                It's interesting that no one

tackled this question, except for a brave attempt by a knowlegeable C3 judge and a guy that previously would have almost spat on a flight ribbon.

Is there something I'm missing here?

Re: It's not that the question is so tough,

It's that I can't remember seeing a "Zipper" rear window on the judging field, so one has to think a minute to figure out what deduction would be rendered. Do you judge it under the " side and rear window" section or the "top" section. The "windows" section has 30 points for originality and 30 for condition (including the side windows. The "top" section has 35 for originality and 35 for condition. You be the judge!
