    '67 Headlight Bucket Repair Question

Does anyone have a recommendation for an adhesive to repair a missing piece in a '67 headlight bucket. There is a piece missing approximately 1" long by 1/2" deep along one edge that mates to the Bezel. It's not a structural repair, purley cosmetic as it is well away from the pivot mounting area too. Since you can't weld pot metal, I was thinking of using something like Evercoat Fiber Tech or maybe even panel bonding adhesive. Any thoughts.

    Thanks,
    Scott

Scott, I've used JB Weld to help hold one of my buckets together. One of the screw tangs that hold the front bezel on was broken off, drilled and pinned it back in place and used the JB Weld as an adhesive to help hold it. Haven't had any problems with it yet.

I would reccomend a two part adhesive from Lord Fusor Co. Their products are simply amazing, the bonding strnght is actually grater than a spot weld. You can bond plastic to plastic to metal to metal.

Tig weld broken off piece. Bevel edges and grind flat after weld. Then bondo fill, sand smooth. Use a green zinc chromate primer over aluminum. This will be permanent and not show thru later. Follow with sealers and finish as is rest of car.

          Thanks all,
Gene, I didn't realize one could TIG pot metal without problems. Does it weld similar to aluminum or not, if so we'll fire up the Miller!

Yes, it Tig welds very nice if one is careful. The material appears to be a low grade aluminum die casting. Most people think it is zinc or pot metal. Heli-arc with a very small sharp tip and flow in a soft rod for filler. My buddy is an excellent welder and I learn from him. I now have repaired 3 buckets and all are not detectable.

Yes, I've always heard they were Pot Metal so I didn't even try to weld it. I'll give it a shot this weekend.
