    64 Radio

Well I bench tested the original radio that came with my car. I think I now know why it was swapped for the panasonic cassette player. First turn of the volume control resulted in a horrible loud screech coming out of the brand new speaker I just bought. The antenna setup I had for this test was very crude but it still received both am & fm stations.
So I now know the radio works but has a lot of static when I touch the volume.
I also have a scratch on the lens so that needs to be replaced too.

Is it a hard job to replace the volume control? or is this one of those jobs best left up to the experts?

Who can be trusted to do the job correctly at a fair price?

    Re: 64 Radio

    Steve,

Have you tried some electronics contact cleaner? I had the same problem with the radio in my '64 and a few shots of the contact cleaner into the volume control switch and the problem was solved. I did this to cure it for the "Founders Award" operations check that the car will be going through at the SE NCRS Regional in Bowling Green, KY in May.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks! Used a little CRC elctronics cleaner and it cured the problem!
Looks like someone was in there before me. I noticed a tiny green wire with a white stripe that was cut and pushed away from the place where it was attached. Looks like a tiny jumper wire. Curiosity got the better of me so I made the connection with another wire to see what would happen. Well I got a loud HUMMMM. when I jumpered the wire back to where it was once connected. I quickly disconnected my jumper wire and it went back to playing good again. Receives all stations across the scale and no more noisy volume control. I pushed that little jumper wire back to it's original position and closed up the radio cover. Now all I need is a good lens and I'm ready to reinstall it. Thanks again for saving me some bucks to repair something that wasn't really broken!
