Re: 327 blow by.
Put a load of Chevron Delo 15W-40 in the crankcase and give it a good Italian tune-up.
How often do you change the oil? You need to change the oil annually regardless of miles driven. Otherwise you will reap what you sow.

Re: 327 blow by.
Good that you change the oil annually, but assuming you store the car in winter or don't drive it much in winter, change the oil BEFORE winter, so it doesn't sit all winter with "used" oil. The clock doesn't run on clean oil in the crankcase.
An Italian tune-up is taking it out and running the s--t out of it.
You should do a leakdown or compression test to see if you have a ring problem, but HD diesel engine oil and some vigorous exercise can actually free up a sticky ring.

Re: 327 blow by.
See if your pcv valve is stuck in the closed posistion. July issue of Corvette Enthusiast has an excellent article by John Hinkley on how the PCV system is supposed to work
Hopefully its just a stuck valve
With the roads in our area just finally getting cleaned of all of the road salts I hopefully will be able to give my 66 an "Italian Tune up" this Saturday- Top

Re: 327 blow by.
Since this will most likely be the ONLY time I can correct the DUKE, I'm going for it..
Here in NY, an Italian Tune-up is clearly a "shot to the back of the head"...
Not taking it out and running the s--t out of it. Although that might prevent the shot to the back of the head.. :-)

Re: 327 blow by.
Joe, I drive a 79 Mercedes 240D with a grand total of 62 horsepower when it was delivered new. In the MB diesel world an Italian tune-up is just as previously described - drive it like you stole it! In addition, because most people don't do this, it is suggested by diesel gurus to find a long hill and drive it as fast as you can with your foot to the floor. Do this regularly.
Now, here in western PA with steep hills and 62 hp, I am often embarrassed when 18 wheelers pass me going UPHILL. That's our version of an Italian tune-up. I doubt that I would want your version!

Re: 327 blow by.
Back in '80 to '84 I had a diesel Rabbit - my "energy crisis" car. I think it was rated at 48 HP, and every time I drove it, it got an Italian tuneup.
I drove it just like I was taught to drive GM Coaches back when I drove sightseeing tours to Mendenhall Glacier near Juneau, AK in the summer of '67. To acclerate you floor the throttle and shift just before the speed governor.
The diesel Rabbit was actually kind of a fun car to drive because you drove it flat out all the time and slowed as little as possible for corners because that momentum was so hard to get back.
I never had any problem keeping up with traffic or even being the fast guy in the left lane as long as the terrain was flat.

Re: 327 blow by.
Duke; those probably had the GM 8V71 Detroit Diesels in them, I drove a few 18 wheelers with those engines and the standing joke was, the best way to drive them was to slam your hand in the door in the morning when you got in( so you were mad). BUT they lasted forever!- Top

Re: 327 blow by.
A pair of vise-grips on the return line to the fuel tank did wonders for those old 71 318's. I wasn't happy until I had 4-5 inches of flame coming out the top of the stacks. Ya just had to be careful not to pinch them too tight. Yee Haw!
Pollution be damned, I was getting paid by the mile! I'm so ashamed.- Top

Re: 327 blow by.
I can't remember the model number of the coaches I drove, but they were the basic model sold for municipal transit, configured with "airline seats" and no back door. The engine was a 6V71, with a four speed crash box, and at the 1800 RPM governor, I recall that they were at 52 MPH in fourth.
The company also had highway coaches - I think they were PD4106s - that traveled the Alaska Highway, and those had the 8V71 that I recall were governed at 2100, and they could probably do at least 80.
Those two stroke Jimmy diesels sure sounded great, especially when I blasted down the narrow Juneau streets - foot to the floor - at 1800 in first or second gear and heard the sound reflect off the buildings.

Duke,
it was 52 hp.
My Dad bought an 82 brand new. Best car we ever owned.
