    correct midyear engine mounts

Does anyone know for certain what the correct engine mounts look like? I was told that the ones that most of the suppliers sell for about $30.00 is correct for passenger cars, but not for the vettes, and that the less expensive one is correct for the corvette. The more ex*****ive one has a "tab" below the lower hjole for the engine, while the other just has the lower hole and nothing below it.

    Thanks. Brandon Korman

It depends on the year of your car. 1963-69 used a non-safety type motor mount. this mount does not have the locking "tab" that you speak of. Overall, it is narrower than the locking-style motor mount. The original GM non-locking mounts were discontinued years ago(about 1970, or so) and replaced with the locking style for all 63+ Corvette SERVICE applications. Using the locking style mount on pre-1970 Corvettes does require modification of small block, lower "V" ignition wire shields. With GM mounts, instructions for the modification are included with the mount kit. Most "reproduction"/aftermarket non-locking style mounts are similar, but not identical to the originals. Many are also of "foreign" manufacture.

In 1970, Corvettes and other Chevrolet passenger cars began using a locking style motor mount. This mount is designed to prevent excessive "torque-over" of the engine in the event that the vulcanized rubber portion of the mount fails. The current GM SERVICE engine mount kit is very similar, but not identical, in configuration to the originally installed locking motor mounts used on 70-82 Corvettes. Many aftermarket "reproductions" are considerably different and are often of "foreign" manufacture, I discussed the differences in locking motor mounts extensively in a post I made to the board quite some time ago. If you're interested, it should be in the archives for your perusal.
