    C2: First design caliper rebuild

Over the past couple years, I have rounded-up a set of front and rear first design (65-66) calipers for my '66 coupe (traded the original rear set in for cores before I knew what they were - doh!). I'm wondering if they can be sleaved and rebuilt with later style pistons and o-ring type seals. I'd like to keep the originality of the castings, but improve performance and longevity.

Either way, any recommendations for rebuilders?

    Dan-----

The 1st design calipers can easily be sleeved and rebuilt with 2nd design pistons. In fact, that's what most rebuilders have done for years when they come across these castings. Unless you specifically ask that they be maintained in 1st design configuration, that's what usually gets done. If you do want them to remain in 1st design configuration, then rebuilding them gets a lot more expensive. The work to sleeve them without grinding out the piston guides is "non-standard" for most rebuilders and it takes extra time. You pay for that extra effort. Also, the 1st design pistons are WAY more expensive than the 2nd design, either stock or o-ring type.

However, as I say, if you wish to convert the "innerds" to 2nd design, the rebuilders will have no problem with that, at all. My recommendations for rebuilders:

    1) Carter's Corvette of Livermore, CA

    2) Vette Brakes of St. Petersburg, FL

    3) Stainless Steel Brakes Corporation of Clarence, NY

Any of the above will do a 1st class job for you.

Carter prefers to use the 1st design. I did mine there last year and I think it was $85 a pop. He uses all GM parts when available.

        Dan,
Last year I sent my first series calipers (for my original '65) to Lonestar Caliper Co. in Canton, TX. I did not want them converted to the later design.

They sleeved and rebuilt them to orignal requirements. The price was plenty reasonable. If interested, you can call them at (903) 873-8400 and ask for Ken McCormick.

        Good luck with your '66.

        Regards,
        Gene
