The spare for my '64 coupe is a radial that is obviously wider than the original equipment tire. My question is how snug should the cover fit? Even without the tire in there, it doesn't even seem to fit tight (and I know it is the original cover.) Do I need to get a smaller spare or maybe go with a repro bias tire as the spare, assuming it won't get much use even though the car is driven. Thanks, David

Re: '64 Spare Cover Question
Hi David!
I can only speak from personal experience with my 1967 car (which has an identical spare tire cover to your 1964) with standard rally wheels and reproduction redline 7.75 tires:
The cover "V" brace can be lifted until almost contacting the rear lower body panel (but not quite), effectively "wedging" the spare into position.
Hope this helps!

Re: '64 Spare Cover Question
The ideas are good but my real problem is I hope to try to bowtie the car, see my later posts dated today re wheel color, so I can't start changing a bunch of things. I've already made one mistake by removing the whole spare unti for cleaning and I'm afraid it may cost me some points as I understand the judging is very critical of parts that have been removed, if even for cleaning. I'm between a rock and a hard place. I guess I'll try an original bias tire and bolt the cover up as tight as it will go. Theoretically this will be how it left the factory.- Top
