    Timing cover/oil pan seal

    (See link to picture below)

Before pan gaskest is installed, there is clearance between the pan and the rubber seal in the bottom of the timing cover. So when the gasket is installed and pan bolted down there will be no deal. Am I missing something? Can the seal in the timing cover be "shimmed" with silicone to make it seal?

Also, as an aside, what is the hole in the bottom of the block next to the fuel pump housing?

There are two thicknesses of oil pan front seals available. Are you using the thicker one?

I'm using the one that came in the set. It's right at 1/4" thick.

        Steve-----

The .22" thick front oil pan seal fits ORIGINAL 63-74 Corvette small block oil pans. If, per chance, you're using a later pan or a 63-74 GM REPLACEMENT Corvette oil pan, then you need the 0.41" thick front seal.

If you're using a later pan and you ask for an oil pan gasket set for a 63-74 Corvette, you'll get the wrong front seal with it. All of the ohter 3 parts of the gasket kit are the same for all 63-79 Corvette engines.

The hole near the fuel pump is to hold the pump push rod up using a long bolt to aid installing the pump. Then after the pump is installed use a 1/2 long bolt a brass washer to plug the hole or engine oil will blow out.

The hole has a solid bottom; that is, it is not connected to any thing. (65 block)

              Steve -

The blind hole in the pan rail adjacent to the fuel pump is a master gage hole that was used to register the block on a locating dowel on the machining pallet; there's an identical second one adjacent to the starter bolt holes. Those two holes located the block when it was clamped to the pallet for its long trip through the block broach and machining transfer line.
