Block Casting Date Location

I have found the casting number for my 1960 283 270hp block in the usual place (rear left side of block on top of bellhousing flange). Right now I am having trouble finding the casting date. Covin suggests that the casting date will be to the right of the casting number. What I see there is some sort of tag that is attached by two screws. There appears to be a raised character that is possibly and "L" or a "1". I don't think that this is the casting date as it is only one character. I cannot see any other digits, however, the tag is painted. Is there another location that the casting date may be? Covin suggests that there are. Any direction would be appreciated.

It should be on the right hand side in sort of the same position that the casting # is on the left. I believe you may have to remove the road draft tube to see it.

John, Ed is spot on. Looking at the block from the rear the casting number is at about 10 o'clock and the date is at about 2 o'clock. I believe the "tag" you are refering to is what shift, 1st 2nd or 3rd, the casting was made.
