    65 Timing Tab

    Hi Guys!

What is the correct timing tab for a 65 L79 look like? I just picked up an original finned balancer, and a timing cover was included with it. I noticed that the timing tab is larger than the one presently on the car. The JG did not provide any info

    Thanks!

    Don,

There's a difference between the 65 and the 66 and later timing tab. The 66 and later tab is longer and also has several degree marks for retard below the "0" line. If your new one has three or four marks below "0", I suspect it's the 66 and later style. Your original 65 should only have one or two lines below "0".

Thanks Michael. Looks like the one that is currently on my car is the correct one. I just sell the other one on ebay!

      Thanks!

You might be able to get a good visual from the Paragon catalog too.

Don is there a part number stamped on this balancer? How does the keyway line up in comparison to the timing mark? It should be about 8 degrees, or about a 1/4" off to the side?
(I have customer who is having his engine rebuilt and there is a problem with a supplied new balancer versus the original)

            Bruce,

If you are working anything 62 to 68, the correct balancer has the hub C/L, the keyway, one pulley mounting threaded hole and the timing mark all in a line. For the 69 and later engines, the timing mark was moved aprox 10 degrees. The correct 8" balancer for 62-68 would, I believe, have the part and casting number 3817173 cast in.

The 62-68 balancer must also use the matching 62-68 timing chain cover for proper timing tab/mark location.
