    Re: SMOG pump question.

by 1966 and 1967, california required smog pumps on some corvettes of 66 and 67. by 68, nearly all, if not all, states required smog systems. c-3's not my area of expertise, but i believe your 76 would have left st louis with smog pump. shouldn't be too hard to find like the 66 and 67 critters. can recall pulling a bunch of them off cars of the 70's and tossing them out for the garbage man. mike

Are the smog pumps dated? Where could I find an original for my 1976? As usual...Thanks

        Re: SMOG pump question.

Use of A.I.R. varied year by year, engine configuration by engine configuration. Acts like A.I.R. was installed when a given power plant configuration was 'close' to the line on emissions profile and/or law(s) required it. In your case, the answer is spelled out in the Judging Guide:

"All 1975-77 Corvettes are equipped with an A.I.R. system in St. Louis with the exception of 1975-77 L48 with M-40 Turbo-Hydromatic Transmission."

The second edition75-77 TIJG says L-48 auto had no smog pump. All L-82's and all 4 speeds had a smog pump. Lyle

Bill Hodel in Massillon, Ohio can supply whatever you need, but it will be VERY expen$ive.

Yes, as is the diverter valve. Be prepared to $pend big buck$. Not worth it to me unless you're going to have the car judged.

There's a visor information sleeve for a '69 on eBay just now that's at $380 with days to go. Compared to this, Bill Hodel is dirt cheap, and his merchandise is perfect. I'd call him and get what you need. You'll be completely satisfied with Bill's stuff.

                    Christopher-----

Usually, the date will be found on a machined surface of the pump's aluminum housing. It's a very small font, Julian date code that has the last digit of the year and the consecutive day of the year. That is followed by a few other characters indicating pump model and shift.

Believe it or not, the pump for your car is still available brand new from GM. It's GM #7817809. It currently GM lists for $339.87. It won't have the correct date, of course, but it should be otherwise virtually identical to the original. And, it will be NEW.

That's where the GM parts availability ends, though. The original style diverter valve and, even, subsequent replacements are discontinued. The original style check valves are discontinued. The pump bracket is discontinued and the manifold trees are discontinued.

As mentioned, Bill Hodel is a good source for original-style AIR systems and components.

                      Re: A.I.R. Point of Information

As emission regs tightened, it got tougher for 4 speeds to get certified with available emission control technology. So more automatics were sold to accompany the "luxury sports car" image but eventually GM had to suspend availability of 4-speeds from the Corvette option list in 1982.

                          Re: SMOG pump question.

I'm confused by the statement that the '75 L48 automatic did not have a smog pump. I have a very early (first two weeks of production) 75 convertible L48 automatic that has the smog pump. The motor is absolutely original as is the smog pump and diverter valve (it has never been off). Is is certain no 75 L48 automatics had the smog pump?

Seems like we've gotten into this controversy before about the 75 model year...first year featuring the catalytic converter. I show all 75s equipped with A.I.R.
