1962 Starter

I am looking for a starter for my 1962 340hp/4 speed. I need the starter that connects to the bell housing and not the block. My car build date is April 4th. I would like to find one dated Feb or March 62. Does anyone know the part number I am looking for? Anyone know where I might find one?

...a real one at all, let alone one with the date you want. If total originality does not concern you, Goat Hill products can "make" you one with any number or date you want. Or you could try John Pirkle's waiting list for a real one within the date range you need. Could be a long wait, but might be worth a try. If you find a real one, the price may give you sticker shock. Good Luck, Dennis

When I talked to John Pirkle several months ago he was not even adding anyone to the waiting list for this starter.

The starter you're looking for was also used on all '62 327 manual trans Passenger cars. Maybe that will help your search.

With all respect to Verne--1107889 starters were used on passenger car 327's in 62. That is the reason that the 7233 is so very difficult to find. It was used on some 409's and 62 Corvettes with manual transmission. If they were used on all 62's, they woud be much more common.In 30 years of chasing 62's and 62 parts, I've had 32 62's--and only 7 7233 starters--and only 2 of those were on cars.

No argument from me. I guess my '62 assembly manual, original '62 parts book, and Delco application catalog are all wrong. And I guess the factory installed the wrong starters on my 2 Impalas (neither of which were built at St. Louis).

My 1962 parts book, dated October 1, 1961, in group 2.041 entitled "Starting Motor", lists part number 1939508 for all 57-61 8 cyl. and Corvette except "T.G., H.T., 348, 409" and alsop fits 62 (all) with 283. The note indicates (1107664 on n/ plate).
It also lists part number 1941681 for 1962 pass., Corvette (327) (except P.G.), and then has the note (stamped 1107688).
My 1962 AIM (assembly manual) section 6, sheet 11.00 has 1107233 starter motor.

I'm having trouble, with that information, concluding that the books have the same listings for passenger car and Corvette for 1962 starters. The AIM is what we have found to be the case--with the 7233 never available over the counter at GM--which makes it even more difficult to find.
