    67 exhaust manifolds

    Gentlemen,

I have the current production manifolds from GM that require additional brackets to make work for driver's side alternator. I also cleaned them up with carbide bit and had ceramic coated. I can see very small rust spots where they got wet from hideous rain storms in the hills above Burbank. (1) what coating or spray works well against rust with least amount of point deducts? (2) Does GM have a current manifold with holes on front to bolt alternator bracket like original? I feel it might be best to go back to original 2" manifolds to save me the headache. Thanks much!

    Justin-----

Untill quite recently, GM did have a 2-1/2" outlet manifold with the correct "forward facing" bracket for the left side alternator. It was GM #3846563. However, it's discontinued now. I don't know if it's available in reproduction yet, or not.

I would sugges the plasma spray process that John Hinckley has shown before on his Z/28 Camaro.... from Jerry MacNeish at Camaro High Performance.....see website below....Craig

First, ANY coating a judge can detect on exhaust manifolds that were originally unpainted at the factory is going to cost you 20% of the originality points associated with the exhaust manifold since the coated part violates the FINISH axis of originality.

That said, there are a number of methods to retain the cast iron 'look' without growing a crop of surface rust, but most of the paint-on slurry based products wind up looking 'fat' or 'fudge-like'. There is one coating I really like and it's probably a 50-50 shot whether judges are knowledgeable enough to detect it. That's the ColorGard product from TechLine Coatings.

You can surf to their web site (www.techlinecoatings.com) and look it up. A 4-oz can of their #1204, cast iron, exhaust manifold paint will do four (maybe six) exhaust manifolds. You have to use an airbrush, following mfgr's recommendations, to paint it on and it goes on THIN (a few mils thickness tops). Once it's setup by heat, the finish is virtually indestructable!

I've had it on my '71 SB now for a bit over 7-years and I've logged +60K miles on the car as well as had the exhaust mani's on and off, so this stuff can withstand handling. The paint was originally formulated for use on Jet aircraft engines, so it's not only able to withstand high heat, it laughs at wind/water abrasion....

          Justin,

Did you try Memory Lane in Sun Valley?

            Re: 67 exhaust manifolds-Thanks...

.. for all the help! Joe, I think I'll move back to original manifolds and save all the hassles. Jack, I'll check out the product you mentioned. Kevin, I have the original manifolds, I just thought I'd switch to 2 1/2" and run the original brackets. It's turning into more work than the little extra power it's worth. I'd probably get smacked pretty hard during judging too!
