    Engine build

Hello friends, I currently have a 283 block and working on determining a compataable engine setup. I hate to ask stupid questions but here it goes anyhoot. Engine is going in a 61.

Can the 3890462 202/194 double hump heads be used on the 283 (3.875 +.030 bore). These heads were originally used on 302/327/350 engines with a 4" bore (as most of you know). Concerned about valve and piston clearance and valve and cylinder side wall clearance since these have the bigger valves. Using flat top piston.

Camshaft preference is GM #3896929. intake lift of 0.390" and exhaust lift of 0.410" (with 1.5:1 rockers) and intake duration of 319 degrees (195 degrees @ 0.050" lift) and 320 degrees (202 degrees @ 0.050" lift).

What do you think, will it explode or be a solid/RELIABLE street engine?

    Re: Engine build

461 heads with 1.94"/1.5" valves were used on both '61 FI engines, so 462s should work if they have the "small" valves, but maybe not with the 2.02"/1.6" valves.

Beginning in '64 the 461 and later big port heads were produced with both valve sizes depending on application.

A 283 with the mild "300 HP" cam and big port heads, should have a smooth 500 RPM idle, be docile at low revs, but pull much stronger in the top end with useable revs to at least 5500 compared to a similar 283 with the OE type medium port small valve heads.

      what is your goal

Are you looking to build a correct appearing engine with the correct block casting or just a fun NOM driver? What is your desired HP level, RPM range, etc. What trans and rear?
