C2 Deck Lid Drain vs. Soggy Carpet

My 65 deck lid "gutter" just fills up with water when I wash the car. Is there a secret to getting the water to drain? Was it originally designed to drain? I need to get this fixed since it is filling up and leaking into my rear storage area.

Yes, it is supposed to drain. There is a slotted hole in the corners, and there is an outlet on both sides under the fender wells. Look at both places for a build up of mud and crud.

      Mark,

If you have an air compressor, try blowing some compressed air through the drains in an attempt to clear them. As Wayne suggested, also make sure the drain oulet holes in the fender wells aren't blocked. You mighty also try to snake a electricians phish tape or metal coat hanger up through the drain outlet to clear and blockage.

I have a '64 convertible and I always take plenty of extra towels just to be safe.

Mark, the rear upper support that acts as the channel for the water has a piece of metal attached with rivets. This piece extends from one side of the car to the other. The deck lid hinge upper bolts go through this part. Check to see if the last rivets on the underside outer edges were ever installed. I have seen some cars where these are missing and the water runs through the small rivet holes, soaks the carpet, rusts the bottom of the deck lid hinges and rusts out the springs. If water stays in the channel too long it will rust out the nut plate that is riveted to the inside. This is the nut plate that the upper bolts from the deck lid hinge screw into.
