C2: Question about restoring/removing side exhaust

I'm looking at basically an original, unrestored '67 coupe 327/300 Air car. Somewhere along the line, someone has added factory style side exhaust. My question is this: how difficult is it to remove the side exhaust and return the car to the original factory rear exhaust? There has to be more to it than simply cutting two holes and putting the rear bezels back in the rear panel. If I buy this car, my intention will be to have it flight judged after I've restored it.

Am I making a mistake considering the purchase of an otherwise original '67 coupe that has side exhaust added to it?

    Thanks for any insight.

The big question is have the rocker brackets been removed or damaged? May also have to do some fiberglass work, if it has been cut for clearance. The exhaust panel is the easy part. Just need to get a replacement panel.

Tony, My 65 had the same thing side exhaust added. If the rocker cover support brackets are cut off that will be a pain. Mine were bent back and I just had to straighten them. The fender tips on the front were cut off where the side pipes wrap around the rocker. Several vendors sell these pieces and they can be reglassed in. Also the back tips may have been cut off also. Mine were still there. Other then these couple things I can't think of anything else, I'm sure if i missed something someone will add on here.

        Tony,
Can you get the car for a fair price? If you can, I would jump on it! Pull off the side exhaust and have a closer look at the rear valance. The previous owner might have simply covered the holes or switched to a side exhaust valance. A/C is a rare option and adds quite a bit of value to the car, assuming original and not added. I bought my 67 coupe basketcase with a little hesitation, but its value appreciates faster than money in the bank, one good thing about Barret Jackson Auctions. Do it!

If the rocker panel mounting brackets are gone?

Then what? Is it too difficult to reinstall the mounting brackets? I really like this car, but I don't want my emotions to blindside me.

              Don't Cut the Valence

If it is an original sidepipe panel, these are harder to find than an original stock exhaust panel.

Also, there is more to it than simply cutting holes. There is a ridge for holding the exhaust bezels.

In the last 5 months, I have been checking cars for buyers. The sellers have told me that sidepipe enhance the sales, even when non-original. Several have said they have installed side exhaust for the buyers even though not original.

So unless you hate the side exhaust, or insistent on getting every last point in judging, don't let the side exhaust hold you back. Check the point hit you will take and decide if you can get the level you want even with the hit. Odds are you can if you make sure all else is right.

Tony, Tony, Tony, why would you want to remove your side exhaust? There are people who would kill to have a set of factory side pipes. Just count your blessings and go out and polish those beautiful exhaust tips!
