Can someone either post or email me pictures of an NOS or correctly restored SB starter for a C2? I'm about to go through my '63 starter, and I'm looking for the correct paint and finish detail. Thanks a lot!
Heres a pic of mine. I can't tell you it's "100% correct" but maybe it will give us a frame of reference to speak to. I'm curous myself how close it is.
I can't seem to find the part number stampings on the solenoid, but everything else seems to be close to the description in the Judging Manual. If anybody knows where the part numbers should be stamped, I'd appreciate more info.
Exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. Incidentally, the solenoid p/n on mine is lightly stamped on the top of the solenoid case adjacent to a large dent or crimp (not damage). I had to use some steel wool to bring it up.
My observation of the new starter is that the solenoid case appears to have been painted gloss black. The starter main case appears to be semi-gloss black. The aluminum nose piece looks like it has overspray from the main case - very thinly coated in black. The part of the nose that fits through the bellhousing cover doesn't appear to have been painted.
I have my starter and solenoid out of the car and will send u pictures when I return home early next week. My car is a 67 bb I believe both parts are the original pieces to the car. Pirkle sent me a replacement solenoid but I don`t believe we gonna use it after all. The parts are both black as explained in one of the other responces to your query.
TC, It was a complete replacement as I had an aftermarket installed when I purchased the car. As I recall the Solenoid for a 63 could be painted or plated, but in either case the number should be there.
Thanks for the pic. It's hard to see, but it appears that the aluminum nose piece on yours is like mine, not quite painted, more like oversprayed from the steel main body. Is the area that pokes through the bellhousing cover black or bare aluminum?
Gordon,
Here's a wide shot you can see the overspry or lack there of in this picture better. Nothing had been done to the started this is factory finish.
The starter looks just about the way I would expect as far as painting is concerned. I have several NOS starters [none for sale] and they are all painted pretty much like this one.
