Alot of stories...fact or fiction ?
There are alot of car stories out of Iraq but it's hard to separate fact or fiction. Apparently, Sadaam had quite a collection of automobiles to include some pristine American classics. These were all ordered to be destroyed so as not to fall into the wrong hands. The tank drivers followed orders and ran them over but were distressed at having to crush classics like a Red and White 55 Chevy. I read this story but never saw any pictures to confirm whether true.
Another more recent story related how, in Iraq's revived economy, car sales are booming. Iraqis are stepping up and buying cars for cash with an average of $30K available for purchase. Apparently in Iraq having a large amount of cash on hand at home is not unusual because they don't trust their banks. Favorite car brands according to the article, included BMW and Toyota. Again no pictures. If the story is true, it makes you wonder on several accounts.
I have also read that Iraqi refining capabilities are so outdated and in such a bad state of disrepair, that gasoline has to be imported from it's neighbors. Imagine the irony.
In my opinion, Iraq's oil should be sold at market rates and the proceeds used to pay for their own reconstruction over time. Instead the American taxpayer will likely foot the reconstruction bill and Iraq's national oil revenues will enrich a small handfull of it's citizens. Ain't freedom grand?- Top
