IS IT POSSIBLE THAT A 1972, 454 WATER PUMP COULD HAVE A CAST # OF 3992077 WITH A DATE CODE OF L2071. I THOUGHT THIS WAS AN EARLIER APPLICATION. REF EBAY # 4546932899 THANKS DOUG

Not only is it possible, it's PROBABLE. The 3992077 casting waterpump was used for most, if not all, 1972 Corvette big block applications. It's a virtual certainty that earlier 1972's used it and the date code of "L2071" (December 20, 1971) would be considered a correct date code for any 1972 Corvette with LS-5 built during the January through June, 1972 period. Most likley, though, if it was originally installed on a Corvette, it was one built in January or February, 1972.
The 3992077 waterpump casting, known as GM PART #3998214 for the complete waterpump, was used only for 1971-72 Corvettes and some 1971-72 MD/HD trucks. So, the "original residence" of the pump on eBay has to be either a 1972 Corvette LS-5, a 1972 MD/HD truck, or a SERVICE pump originally sold in 1972.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

GM casting #386100 was first used for the 1973 model year. I would not rule out the possibility that very late 1972 with LS-5 used it. However, I would more expect that early 1973 used the 3992077 than I would expect the 386100 to have been used for late 1972. It's possible, though. For the most part, if not exclusively, the 3992077 was used for the 1972 model year.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
