re more help please carl rose hi chester i'm sorry but i can't help asking if you are going through all the trouble of performing a frame off restoration on the car why not restore it correctly instead of restifying certainly the has enough power will run on pump gasoline and may not overheat quite as much as a modified engine there's no time like now you probably will end up wanting to restore back to stock one day anyway and if you really want to modify the engine don't use the original block carl

re more help please joe lucia a few bits of information the crane roller rocker arms will not free you from having to adjust your valvetrain at least initially your engine does not use a net lash system like later mark v and mark vi big blocks as far as a high volume oil pump goes you can use one with your existing quart oil system the factory mark iv high volume oil pump the so called zl ls oil pump gm has a factory attached screen which is set to fit the oil pan of the quart system this is pretty convincing evidence that gm engineers intended the high volume pump to work with the quart system incidentally the oil pan is identical to the one on your car except for the four corner reinforcements nothwithstanding the above info i do not recommend the use of a high volume or high pressure oil pump for street use there is no practical benefit and you increase the chance of developing oil leaks that's why gm hasn't used such a pump on a production vehicle in many many years

re more help please bill clupper ok let's start from the beginning what do you want to do with the car the stock hp setup is close to what i used in my ' with the exception of the hp tri carb setup the engine was simply blueprinted to factory specs and it ran like gangbusters the stock cam will rev to with excellent performance the camshaft part number was the lift was intake and exaust the pistons have a dome height of and tended to the low side in stock configuration the pistons typically were down from the deck of the block the trick to making this run is in the engine assembly degreeing the camshaft is a must i have seen factory cams that were off as much as degrees using the intake lobe center method the cam should be run as close to stock timing specs a you can get this cam was later replaced by part number there no differences as long as the original timing specs for the cam is maintained during installation forget the hi perf pump i ran a super stocker with the std pump rpm and no bearing problems it just costs you extra horsepower to drive it with respect to the bolts all are the same part number you may have two different manufacturer's which is not all that unusual tune the distributor to the chevrolet spec timing curve and have fun
