'67 license light to body gasket...

I have a July '67 car and neither the AIM nor the Judging Manual mention a gasket between the rear license light housing and the license bezel. I've checked all the vendor catalog sites and none of them have this gasket, except Zip and Paragon. They mention it for '61 to '67 Corvettes. Funny it's not mentioned anywhere else. So can anyone verify if this black gasket is correct for my car? Thanks, PT

    Patrick-----

I don't think that any gasket was originally used between the license lamp assembly and the car body (a gasket definitely was used, though, between the lamp housing and the lens). If I recall correctly, the gasket you describe may be an invention of that "gasketeer extraordinaire", Dr. Rebuild. While the good doctor does not usually get into the business of "re-engineering GM's engineering", every now-and-then he "ventures out into this world". Most of the time, he does it to correct a problem never corrected by GM. Every so often, though, he'll do it just to confound others. Nothing malicious, of course, just a little something to keep people on their toes and stupify the "research organizations" operated by other "entities".

Anyway, although I don't think that the gasket was used in PRODUCTION, if it were me, I'd use it now. I don't think that anyone will be able to tell it's there and it might just do some good.

Joe, I just checked Dr. Rebuild's catalog and he does carry a '61 thru '67 license lamp housing to license bezel gasket. It's described as "die cut black sponge rubber", like in my picture above. It would seem to me that a gasket would be needed there. PT

No gasket at that location on my 67.... There is nothing to seal. Moisture can be on both sides. A gasket is necessary for the lenses as Joe said.... GM didn't care about a gasket for paint marks in this location
