    C2 L89

Can anyone tell me if there is any way to tell whether a car is a real L89 or a fake. There are no docs. Is there a registry showing all 16 vins or am i reaching too high ? Any help would be appreciated.

GM didn't save such records so any such "registry" that came along later would be "secondary" information and of dubious value, at best. I don't know of such a registry, anyway.

I would say that without proof-positive, indisputable documentation any such car would have to be considered "non-authentic". It's just too easy to "create" such a car and with the motivation induced by the market price of such a car I would NEVER assume that one is authentic without incontrovertable documentation of some form. In the process, a legitimate, truly original car might be "maligned", but that's just what happens when documentation is lost. Unless such documentation turns up or unless the GM original build records miraculously "surface", the car will always be a "question mark".

      No...

Eventhough 1967 was the first year for Corvettes shipping from the factory with their 'build sheet' affixed to the top of the gas tank, absent an undisputed paperwork trail back to the original owner & selling dealer, it's possible to 'fake' anything. Even with a tank sticker, a true doubting Thomas could question if the sticker (or the tank for that matter) came from the current car...

With only 16 of these vehicles built, according to factory records, you're dealing with a VERY RARE Corvette. Even if the car has been judged by various factory concours organization (NCRS, NCCB, ChevyVettefest), it's an 'appearance' sport/hobby (does it 'look' like it's the real McCoy item?) and the award certificates have appropriate disclaimer(s) to that effect.

Soooo, if a 'restorer' happened to 'make' a particular car into an L88/L89 and did so with expertise and appropriate due diligence, a 'ringer' could result...

          Howard,

I think Joe hit reconfirmed your thoughts.
