C2 (Feb 1967) Bolt heads on Muncie M-21?

    Judging manual mentions phosphate.

What's the most common side cover bolt head?

    Thanks in advance.

    Tom -

The side cover bolts on my June car (original, including the old metal tag) all have flat heads (no indentation) and are plain except for a very small raised "L" at the edge, parallel to one of the hex flats.

      Tom,

I have the same bolts that John Talks about on my Dec 19th 1966 built 67 coupe, I have the M-20 wide ratio.

Thanks to both you guys! However...

        John and Justin:

I found all 7 side cover bolts to be smooth except for SBC lettering. The tag was still on, as was the back up light switch.

On the other hand, there's a good chance the cover's been off before, back in the early 70's.

        Great photo. Thanks again!

Justin: Your usual great photos. Thanks

Is your car S/N located on the side, between the side cover and the "bearing plate". Can't tell in this photo.

            Tom-----

I think that the key thing on the Muncie side cover screws is that they're usually non-indented head (i.e "trimmed") cap screws with a "plain" (non-plated) finish and no grade marks (i.e they're SAE grade "2" or GM 260-M). All of the Muncie side cover attachment screws that I thought had any chance of being original were of that configuration and style.

As far as manufacturer's headmarkings, I'm sure that more than one was used. "SBC" was one of the period-correct fastner manufacturers. "L" was another. Neither of these were commonly found in hardware stores, so I doubt that sort of genesis for what you have.

              Vin # on Muncie

              Tom,
It's stamped in the usual place, except I don't remember where this is located. The whole assemble was rebuilt, then wrapped in plastic and stuck in my shed, not available to me now. It is also a very faint or 'lightly' stamped number, but I can say it's near a seal somewhere.

Re: Vin # on Muncie - Thanks

Thanks, Justin - Mine looks about the same. It's stamped "uphill" to the right of the side cover. You can almost see yours above the shifter rod.

If interested, I'll e-mail a smaller and modified version of your photo. The modification is a rectangle I placed over the VIN loc. (I think you might have to write me first. Not sure I can attach the photo when doing the e-mail from this discussion area...)

Also: I found a prior posting where you included a photo of the tag. It clearly shows the side cover bolts - Thanks again. I have another Muncie with a couple of those on it. It also has one or two SBC types and some higher grade replacements.

                Thanks to Joe also.
