    57 283 Cylinder Location?

Where is #1 cylinder on a 1957 283 2x4? Driver's side or passenger side? I have three books, and they all have different pictures. "How to Rebuild Your Small Block Chevy" shows it on the drivers side front (pg. 150). The 1957 Passanger Car Shop Manual shows it on the passenger side front (pg. 6y-50). "Servicing the 1957 Corvette Engines and RPO Equiptment" shows #1 on the passenger side, but at the rear of the engine (pg. 20).

The illustrations in both of the cited GM manuals are wrong, and the Vizard book is correct; all Chevy V-8's have the driver's side front as #1.
