I don't know the exact depth of the tapping. However, the washer used is 5/16" thick and the bolt used is 2-1/4" long. So, I would say that the tapping should be about 2" deep and, perhaps, a little greater than that.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1963 crankshaft snout bolt depth
Joe's reply makes sense and I agreed at first but after thinking about this procedure for a while, I don't remember ever having to drill down that far. It occured to me that the washer never actually makes contact with the end of the crankshaft nose when installed and that distance should be subtracted from the 2" figure. There's at least a 1/2" gap between the end of the C/Shaft and the washer when installed. I don't have a crankshaft here to measure so I emailed Jorjorian and asked if he would send the dim for the hole. It is indeed 1.5" from the flat end to the bottom of the hole.
Not a big deal I suppose but every 1/2" of drilling/threading is that much more work and chance to damage the first inch or so of threads as you are cuttung the last 1/2".
Wonder how long the threaded portion of the bolt is? That would also be a good indication of the depth of thread required.- Top
