    !964 Coupe Exhaust

    Hi All!

I'm currently starting a full, body-off restoration of a '64 Fuelie Coupe. Everything is correct and original EXCEPT the car has incorrect side exhausts!

I'm the third owner of the car, and these pipes were added by the second owner about 15 years ago. They look and sound fantastic, but, they are of course, not proper for the year. The restoration is being done by one of the best guys in the northeast, and he urges me to return to the original off-road rear exhaust.

I'm just curious to know what you guys think about this. Should I keep the side pipes and say: "GM DID intend to put side exhausts on the 64's, and I'll just keep them and love them", or should I give them up and return to the original system?

    What would you do?

Last question, will I get better performance (more power, etc.) with the side exhausts?

    Thanks for reading and replying!

    Best regards,

    Eddie Lamb

    Eddie-----

If it were me, the decision would be easy----remove the side exhaust and go back to undercar exhaust.

As far as performance goes, there's no significant difference between undercar and side exhaust. It's just NOISE.

I agree with Joe, but I'm sure many others will tell you "It's your car." In other words, it depends on who you are out to please the most. (Yourself, your mate* or the NCRS judges). Tom Dingman

I'd go back to under car exhaust.

Thanks for taking the tiem to reply guys.

To be honest, I am strongly leaning towards going back to the original exhaust - I was just curious to get some other opinions.

Since everything else is original or correct, I'm sure the side pipes diminsh the "value" of the car.

          MANY thanks!

I have a 64 365hp with chambered exhaust and it is awesome sounding. If you could get chambered exhaust on a 64 from the factory I would strongly recommend it.

                Eddie,
-------The fella that put the sidepipes on your 64 actually subtracted horsepower from it. There has been more than one chassis dyno test that will back up this statement. Sidepipes sound great but are very restrictive. As a plus, true off-road 64 undercar exhaust sounds really great on a solid lifter car. Mike H and I are both off-road undercar exhaust guys as are many on this forum. Funny I ended up with a real sidepipe car.........Bill S
