I am considering buying a 65 coupe that like many C1's I have driven tends to require constant correction to keep the car going straight. The ball joints and tierods appear to be original, as well does the steering box. The car has repro bias ply tires. Which would be the most likely candidate to address first to correct this condition? Do steering boxes ever really wear out or do they just require adjustment?

Re: C2 wandering steering
Bob,
The most common problem with a Vette wandering is that the steering box is not centered. It's marked on the shaft and that's the high point on the gear set. It must be in the center. That should be the first thing an alignment man does before he starts alignment. Knowledge is lost as most just center the steering wheel. That's OK if it's in alignment with the steering box.
Find you an old guy and tell him your problem. An old alignment guy will smile and fix it in a minute.

If the steering box is centered check the rag joint. My 65 had a wandering problem and I found the rag joint was the culprit. I also have the bias ply tires and agree that they cause a wandering condition especially on secondary roads.- Top

Re: C2 wandering steering
I had the same problem with the last 65 I bought. I am quite familiar with mid years and this one did not drive right. It had repro bias ply tires that were the problem. They are great for showing but that is all. Don H.- Top
