    brake rotor help

    Gentlemen and ladies,

I recently got some new rear brake rotors thru Eckler's. The box is labeled as "GM restoration parts" and also says "made in Taiwan" (oxymoronic in a way?) Anyway, the runout is about .002 at the inner surface and .005 at the outer. There is an omega-shaped clip (looks like a horseshoe that curves out at the ends)attached in the cooling fins on one rotor, and several in one area on the other one. I was going to remove them, but then realized these are probably balance clips of some sort. They dont look very safe to be turning many revolutions at high speed. Should I just give the rotors back? What's the best place to get American-made brake rotors? Thanks in advance.

I haven't had to buy a disc in many years, but when Bairs riveted discs to my rear spinldles about 12-14 years ago I purchased two because my original rear ones had been turned and were not original thickness. I would send the ones you have back and contact Bairs for original equipment discs even if they are used ones. What's wrong with yours?

      Re: brake rotor help

A little over a year and a half ago, I needed to replace a rotor on my 66. I looked long and hard and finally figured out that most aftermarket rotors are Chinese made. That is why they are relatively cheap. The one that was delivered to me had to be turned to take out almost .010 of runout. Forutnately, my machine shop is owned and run by my neighbor. He took great care and personally turned these rotors to zero runout. Maybe Joe Lucia can tell you if the good General sells discs but my guess is that these are imported to.

        Brandon,

I believe that Dr. Vette out of Ohio, as well as Corvette Central (who I think gets them from Dr Vette) sell American made ones. They are quite nice, yet reasonably priced. I put two on Dad's 72.

You can also buy Wagner discs that, I believe, are "guaranteed" to be true and need no machining, but they will co$t you.

        Good Luck,

          Hello Brandon:

As Patrick says Wagner rotors are excellent, bought them and double cheched them for runout all four were perfect.
