    C1 Clutch Pedal

I know I've read about this on the forum in the past but I can't seem to find it. I finally got around to hooking up the clutch pedal on my 59 which I did by the book. I depressed the pedal and it went to the floor with great moxy and stayed there. Is this an adjustment problem or is it something else.

    Cheers

    Hi Clark

It could be an adjustment. Did you get the clutch plate centered? It might be that the throw out bearing came partially off the fork in a cocked position and jammed up.Did the transmission go in smoothly? Are the tabs on the fork good?It has to slide smoothly on the transmission shaft. Also check if the rod that pushes the fork, that it did not fall off or is real loose.Start by trying to pull the clutch pedal up by hand.Make sure all the linkage is moving freely.

    Good luck........John

I don't think that there is a problem with the clutch itself. I think that it has something to do with the "monster" spring and the linkage.

Diaphragm style pressure plate or three-finger (Borg and Beck)? The diaphragm style is infamous for this---adjustment can help some with that. If it is the three-finger style, I'm not sure what it would be.

          Hi Clark

Make sure the spring or linkage is not catching on anything. Is the spring the right one and connected to the proper place? Did you try pulling the clutch pedal up by hand to see if there is binding? Have someone push in on the pedal while you look at the linkage for proper operation.

The over-center point adjustment for the "Godzilla Spring" bracket (the point where the spring effort changes from a pedal return spring to an "assist" spring as you depress the pedal) is shown in the ST-12; give that a shot. Diaphragm clutches don't like the "assist" function of the spring, especially at high rpm. I ditched mine and used a C2-style pedal return spring on my '57.

I took the stock spring off and made a bracket that attached under the bolt for the gas linkage. (I think it was for gas linkage, just left of the steering column looking from the engine side.) The bracket looks like the one used for the carb spring on the thermostate housing. I used a spring from a hardware store strong enough to pull the pedal up. It works great.
