Hey folks I gotta question for yall. I want to remove the top dash pad to access the speakers and was wondering what the proceedure is to take the pad out.And by the way I still can't get my steering column to drop down even after removing the two upper shaft bolts (drops 1/2") but you have to pull it down for that clearance, it should drop and stay down. anyone gotta BOMB?
thanks.
Ken.
you must also loosen the 2 bolts on the firewall , were the column exits the drivers cabin, down by the brake , pull the carpet back and look to either side of the column shifter base/support, loosen these 9-16" and the column will drop nicely . get a flash light and there are some small screws holding the dash pad down along the center line of the pad loosen these also and it helps the driverside dash pad to be pulled out
If you're removing the drivers dash pad, understand that the wiring harness goes over the top of the pad, over the top of the speedo and tach gauges, and has a few rubber-coated metal 'clamps'. Make sure you have pulled the harness away from the drivers pad before trying to get it all the way out.
Ken,
To remove the dash pad one first has to remove the passenger side pad (the one with the map pocket in it). That comes out with interior color screws across the top (3, I think), and screws from the sides (in the door jamb, and in the center instrument cluster). Keep track of the center screws (from the instrument cluster) -- they are different lengths, and if you get the long one in the hole for the short one you will poke a hole in the passenger dash pad. The door jamb screws might also be different lengths, be careful.
Once the passenger pad is out, there is a bracket with a screw that attaches the top dash pad to the bracket. Take out the screw (might be two screws, I can't remember for sure -- it has been a long time). Then the interior colored screws on the driver's side (three, I think) and one chrome screw that goes up through the windshield wiper switch. Look carefully around the wiper switch There might be more screws which need to come out, my memory of this is not good.
I recommend removing at least one of the windshield interior side moldings, and you might want to remove both. When the top dash piece was new it would flex enough to come out without removing the windshield side molding, but that was a long time ago. These interior pieces can get brittle from age, so be careful not to force anything.
If you are still with me, I'll give you the best tip of all – I saved it for last:
Buy an Assembly Instruction Manual for the year your Corvette was manufactured. It will have pictures of all the parts I described, and you will be able to see exactly which fasteners need to come out. A picture is worth a thousand words.

To remove the top dash pad all trim around the windshield needs to be removed. Remove RH dash, loosen LH dash and center.Their may be a bracket in the middle with one screw. It is a tight fit and easy to break an old dash but with everything loose push dash to the left and slip it out on the passenger side. It comes almost straight out and on some Corvettes their is more room than others.
