    84 E-Brake "Wear Bracket"

Every week is a new adventure for me for this 1984 refurb. I have gotten to the point of being able to paint and reassemble her after three years of cleaning, repairing and replacing. I am getting impatient now and want to drive her again! My specific problem deals with a broken off tang on the passenger side e-brake "wear bracket" (that is how the Haynes book labeled it). Like many other discontined or obscure parts for this early C4 series, I cannot locate any help in finding and replacing this little metal plate held to the rear brake plate--I don't want to buy the entire plate unless there is no other option. Need a smart brake guy on this one who knows where to get this part. I have tried nation-wide to buy this piece without any success. Help--this is my wife's car and she won't let me work on my 58 and 72 convertible until it is driveable. COMING DEAR!

      Re: 84 E-Brake "Wear Bracket"

      Bill-----

The part of which you speak was a component of the parking brake rear plate. It was never available from GM as a seperate part. I don't think that it is reproduced, either, as a seperate part.

You don't need to be concerned about having to purchase the entire plate to get this part, though. The plates for both sides are long-since GM discontinued and, as far as I know, are not reproduced, either. The left side plate, originally GM #14067569 and later GM #10140515, was discontinued in Jnauary, 1993. The right side plate, originally GM #14067570 and later GM #10140516, was discontinued in October, 1992. Either of them GM listed for $89.50 at the time they were discontinued, so they were a bit "pricey" for backing plates, but that's all moot now. So, the good news is that you don't need to be concerned about purchasing these just to get the part you need. The bad news is that you can't purchase them, even if you wanted to just to get the part you need.

Joe, sounds to me like I should try and find some 84-87 used hub assembly which might have a good bracket on it. Suspect some of the many ebay parter-outers might have such an item. Oh, I have queried several places in an attempt to do just this. But, it must be too small of a sale item to bother with taking the time to do this for me. Somehow I knew you would jump in on this--Thanks. By the way, I got all my 6mm brake line stuff with your help to include the flare nuts form GM. Got all the old crimped lines repaired and in process of putting the carrier assembly back in. What a job just to keep the lines as one-piece tubing.
