    C1 steering wheel

Is there supposed to be a coil spring on the column pushing against the back of the steering wheel? There was on my '59, it is about 1" long and 7/8" in diameter. It isn't shown in the AIM or the GM service manual and I was wondering if it really belongs there. I'm not refering to the small horn button spring. Thanks again. Pat G.

I recently looked for the very same thing. I put a spring on mine. Steering feels better with one.

Pat - Yes there is a spring that fits in there. I'll need help from one of the Mikes, but it believe it is to take up some of the slack between the shaft and the upper bearing (?). The spring is shown in my 62 AIM, albeit rather poorly, Sect 9. I would think 59 is the same. Regards, Dick.

FYI....The dimensions on an original spring are:

          Outside Diameter 1.2"
          Uncompressed height 1"
          Coil diameter .070"

I found out the hard way when I removed the steering wheel from my 1960 for the first time. After the nut was removed, the wheel popped off and hit me in the nose!

Joe, there must have been a big block spring under yours!
Thanks for all the responses. Pat G.
