Bought the # 12364087 from a local Chev dealer; no instructions. Here's how I THINK it is to be used to verify if timing tab on timing cover is accurate.
Car is '65 L76 w/8" finned balancer. The keyway, a crank pulley bolt hole, and timing line on balancer all seem to line up.
Remove all 8 plugs, turn engine over to set balancer line at (say) 4 degrees advance indicated on timing tab; disconnect battery, screw tool into #1 plug hole until contact with piston top (finger-tight, don't force). Then turn engine in reverse direction (by hand) almost 2 complete rotations, or until piston again contacts the stop (don't force). If the timing cover scale is correct, the balancer line should read 4 degrees RETARD. Don't forget to remove piston stop tool before re-connecting battery !
Have I got the procedure correct ? Should it be repeated at (say) 10 degrees for more accuracy ?
