    68 Big Block Cooling

Does anyone have any suggestions for testing the colling system on a 68 L-89 (blockages, sending unit accuracy) and/or any suggestions for getting the beast to run a little cooler?

Hi Noel: Nice car, there is a thread about halfway down regarding a big block running a fever in which there were several great posts that may be of help with your cooling problems.

        Noel,

There is a ton of BB cooling info in the Archives, as well as what Jerry mentioned below. I went through alot of the same stuff with the same set up on my 68 L89. Care to mention anything in particular? TBarr #24014

Noel, I would be interrested in knowing exactly what your problem is with overheating at what particular situation etc. Bob

            Tom,

Sorry about the response time, I, as have others, have been having problems viewing the message board. Anyway, I bought the car in November from a gentleman in MA (I live in NJ) I drove the car twice, 20-30 miles each time in mostly arounf town type of traffic. Occasionally, I had it up to 60-70 mph. WHen in traffic it seemed to get warm (200-210 f) and when we arrive back at the previous owners house it lost alot of coolant. Now, this may very well have been due to having too much and the car being parked on a hill. In other words I am not sure if there is a problem at all. The radiator was recently repalce with an aluminum cored unit and appears to be sealed up properly. The thermostat is a 160 degree unit Currently, I am having some minor work done onm the car up in MA and I am trying to bone up on the nuances of tis beast in prep for spring/summer.

This is my first old vette so I am still on a steep learning curve. The site, when accesible is a tremendous asset and all who have responded to this and other questions I have had have been very helpful. Any gneral info or experiences you have had and are willing to share would be greatfully appreciated.

              Noel,

I can't get on the board any easier either so I went ahead and emailed you. If anyone can get some suggestions posted on the board then that would be fine too. TBarr #24014
