    c1 gas gage

I know this has been dicussed before, but hope someone has a answer, on 57 I replaced screen and brass float on may gas sending unit even attached extra ground wire from unit rim to car frame per someones suggestion I put only 4 gal. of gas in tank but when I turn on key gage goes from empty to
past full I don't think I damaged or altered the sending unit parts when I had it out I'm not very good with wiring but I will try anything you guys suggest
    thanks paul

Unplug the wire to the sender and see if the gauge still pegs to full. If it does then the wire is grounding somewhere between the gauge and the tank.
If it doesn't then the sending unit is at fault.

      Hi Paul

Was the gas gauge working before you worked on it? I would try checking the ground wire and then pull the sending unit back out to see if the float is stuck in the up position. You have to handle it with care.Through my experience with gas gauges, it usually turned out to be a bad ground at the sending unit.Make sure connection area is real clean..

      Bye...John

Rob.to get it right are you saying leave batt. hooked up ,take off pos. wire (leave two ground wires attached and then just turn on key to see results if that is problem does that wire just route under carpet up to dash are those wires seperate from wiring harness thanks

          Paul...

this is the test I use.
          Wiring check:
          Battery on, ignition off

disconnect the sender wire terminal and connect to a good ground
          ignition on

          gauge reads "empty"

          discount the sender wire ground

gauge reads "full" (pegs to the right)
If gauge does not respond, a fault is in the wire.
          gauge = OK
          wire = Ok

          Sender ground is poor

          Sender is bad
Sender resistance; Full = 32 ohms, Empty = 0 ohms
          Gauge check
          Battery on, ignition off

          Pink wire connected

Brown wire disconnected, test lead to terminal connected to a good chassis ground
          ignition on

          Gauge reads "empty"

disconnect the Brown wire from the ground

Gauge reads "Full (pegs to the right)
          turn ignition off

If this checks out the gauge is OK

If negative, turn the ignition on and check the 12v pink wire for voltage
          Gauge measures

          between terminals = 88 ohms

Pink to ground = 117 ohms

Brown to ground = 30 ohms
          Hope some of this helps:

not understanding some parts of message
            can you clarfy
            example:
"disconnect the sender wire terminal &connect ro a good ground"
do you mean connect the pos. wire of sender to ground but leave other ground connected

            next example:
"if gauge does not respond,a fault is in the wire"

yet later you say "wire ok"
don.t understand what wire is ok
            thanks paul
